Nothing But Political: Exhibition Design

A branding concept for Nothing But Political, an exhibition about the life and music of Odetta Holmes. The primarily blue color palette, accented with hints of red, references the blues genre and evokes the colors of the American canon. Once Odetta began her recording career in earnest, her mission became entirely political—from her songs, which she described as “a history of us, and was definitely not in our history books,” to her Afro, one of the first worn openly in popular culture. When asked years later about her decision to wear her hair untreated, she responded, “Nothing but political.”
